Students wishing to enter for the 2027 competition will also be able to attend composition seminars with ECSOC tutors during ECSOC 2026 and are welcome to bring along anything on which they are currently working.

DEADLINE | 4PM SUNDAY 12TH APRIL 2026

The Brief

Welcome to the Chris Claxton Composition Competition! We are welcoming all young composers aged 8-18 to compose a new score for orchestral instruments for performance at the 2026 Elizabeth College Summer Orchestral Course. These scores can be for any combination of instruments from a small ensemble to full symphony orchestra with a minimum of 4 performers and a maximum duration of 10 minutes. The piece could be for anything between a quartet for 4 of the same instrument and a full orchestra. We invite scores of any genre written about any subject; the only works you cannot submit are those you might also be submitting for you GCSE or A-level coursework.

We are launching this competition in celebration of Chris Claxton, a renowned composer on the island of Guernsey and long-time ECSOC tutor, Director and Administrator, who passed away this year.

Who we are

The Elizabeth College Summer Orchestral Course is a non-residential orchestral course suitable for students aged 8 - 20, which takes place on the beautiful island of Guernsey during August. Welcoming students from all over the UK, this internationally respected course boasts celebrated tutors and conductors from the UK and Europe chosen for their enthusiasm, energy, and their friendly and welcoming teaching. 2025 saw ECSOC celebrate the course’s 50th anniversary.

The competition process

This competition is divided into two sections: a junior category for students aged 14 and under, and a senior category with anyone under the age of 18 being eligible to apply.

Working with a Panel of ECSOC’s tutors, we will select one winner from each category to be rehearsed and performed at ECSOC in August 2026. The two winners will also receive a scholarship to attend the course for free! The deadline for submission is Sunday 12th April 2026. (NB students are encouraged to apply before the deadline – the early-bird fee rate is available until 31st March; winners would then be reimbursed.)

Even if you are not one of the winners, all applicants will receive feedback from ECSOC tutors and advice on how to grow their interest and skills as a composer. There is no fee to enter this competition.
